Onam Pookalam

Mythology is very fascinating and many Indian festivals have a mythological legend associated with them. Diwali is about the death of Narakasura, and the triumph of good over evil, Janmashtami is celebration of the birth of Krishna, karthigai Dheppam celebrates how Shiva turned into a column of fire to test Brahma and Vishnu.

I knew the story of Mahabali and Vishnu's Vamana avatar, but didnt know that it was associated with Onam. Ofcourse, we are not Malayalees, so Onam is not a significant celebration for us. but we saw photos of the pookalam that Jyothi made with her boys at home and it was too beautiful to not make. So we celebrated Onam at home.

It was a simple one, most of the flowers and leaves were those that grew in our backyard.

And then we lit candles around it. Shows that there is great beauty in simplicity

  1. Stumbled upon your blog. Could not read everything, but a few. Was so lively. I really felt good reading through a couple of them, especially the fact about how you get most things wrapped around your little ones. So nice. I try that often with my one and only precious little girl. Well, all the best.
